Today we are confronted by a scripture passage about Jesus that has the potential to cause confusion or alarm. We know Jesus to be the one who brings peace—shalom—to the world. Why on earth would he say he comes to bring division? In a time in history when we feel profoundly divided, one from another, is there any guidance or good news to glean from Jesus’ words?
