Pacific Beach United Methodist Church strives to provide meaningful opportunities for connection and spiritual growth within community. This includes coordinating and resourcing small groups, where people connect, build relationships, and take part in authentic conversations at the intersections of life and faith.
Our small group opportunities range from deeply spiritual to the purely fun and entertaining. All groups are open to anyone in the congregation.
Faith and Ministry Groups
Choir
The “Voices of Praise” choir leads the congregation in worship every Sunday. The choir meets on a weekday evening not only to rehearse, but also to pray, laugh, and talk together. Then on Sunday mornings, they warm up before the worship service begins at 10am.
Musical selections include traditional, contemporary, and gospel pieces. The choir is open to musicians of all skill levels. Director of Music Ron Jessee, also the organist, is assisted in leadership by several skilled musicians including Steve Spence, Liesl Hanson, Lisa Pagan, Laura Williams, and Brenda Martin.

Weekly Bible Study
Each Wednesday morning at 11:30am, Pastor Lori leads a scripture and sermon study in person and via Zoom. Please contact the church office for details.
Weekly Prayer Circle
This group meets every Sunday at 9:30am, just before worship, to share and pray over concerns about people in our congregation, our neighborhood, and our world. The meeting is in the Lanai, the glassed-in room adjacent to the courtyard.
Short-Term Study Groups
The church hosts several short-term study groups throughout the year. Over a period of several weeks, the groups may read a book together or watch a series of videos relevant to the season (Lent, Advent). Or the study may focus on a specific topic as we seek to navigate our world from a Christian perspective (racism, immigration, Christian Nationalism). Groups are usually held on Zoom to make them easy to access.
The church uses a Flocknote email system to share announcements about short-term groups. To subscribe to the Studies and Groups email, visit pbumc.flocknote.com/StudiesGroups.
Ministry and Social Groups
Life isn’t all about serious study! Many groups form because we enjoy hanging out with each other around common interests. Fellowship flows naturally as we spend time together.
The best way to get the latest info about all these groups is by subscribing to our weekly email. Visit this page and click on the Subscribe button.
Prayers and Squares Quilting Group
A quilting group meets periodically to sew prayer quilts for those who are shut in or experiencing loss. The congregation ties threads in each quilt and says a prayer before the quilt is presented to the recipient.
Game Days
An avid group of mahjong players gathers frequently after church to enjoy a game together. Beginners welcome!
Movie Matinees
The church screens classic Hollywood movies twice a month on our large screen in the social hall.
Lunch Bunch
A group of church folks meets frequently at various local restaurants to enjoy each others’ company.
