Helper Bags are Making a Difference

Helper Bags are Making a Difference

Line of CareThank you to all who donated time, prayers, love and resources to the successful completion of our first Helper Bag Project. Over 20 volunteers (from the very young to the very wise) packed over 200 bags full of socks, toiletries, chap stick, water and non-perishable foods such as macaroni, single-serve entrees, peanut butter, and more! This project was 100% funded by donations & volunteers. None of the church funds were used — thank you!

A special big THANKS to Pastor Bob who designed and printed the lovely Food Program Postcard which highlights the dates & times of the meal options for the homeless around Pacific Beach. One was placed in each Helper Bag, and more can found at the back of the church. Also, a special big thanks goes to Beth Rhodes, Rick Cook and Scott Caprio for coordination, label making and a last minute blitz of shopping to prepare us for the Work Party on July 25.

How can you still help?

  • Pick up a couple of bags (and/or postcards) in the narthex and distribute!
  • Continue to collect items (especially on sale!): gallon & quart size ziploc bags (those with a zipper worked best), white athletic socks for men & women, chap stick, travel size tissue packs.
  • Volunteer to be on the leadership team by contacting Su-Yen through the church office.

Here’s one story from a volunteer:

There was a young man pushing his cart looking through a dumpster. I grabbed a bag from my car, and gave it to him from PB UMC, and when he thanked me, I said it was our pleasure and God Bless, and he said, “Already have been blessed – by you and this gift”

The few bags I handed out at street corners were well received. One man said, “I LOVE care packages!” Thanks to the volunteers who made this possible.
