Malea Sandstrom, our Sunday School Coordinator, definitely has roots in Pacific Beach. She still lives in the same house that she grew up in, and she attended the same schools that both of her sons later did--from Pacific Beach Elementary through Mission Bay High.
As Sunday School Coordinator, Malea has the important task of recruiting and assisting teachers for the children. She makes copies of lesson plans for the teachers, in addition to coordinating who is teaching on which Sundays. At PB UMC each teacher serves one Sunday a month, with a partner. Thus Malea trains and supports about twenty different teachers. In the past, Malea has also served as Youth Ministry Coordinator and as church custodian; it's possible that no one knows the building and the people of our church more thoroughly than Malea!
In addition to her work at PB UMC, Malea teaches at the weekday preschool at the La Jolla United Methodist Church. Early childhood development is definitely her area of expertise. For many years Malea operated her own in-home day care business. She is known for developing close relationships with families. Young adults who were once in her care (as babies and toddlers) still keep in touch.
When she gets time off, Malea enjoys traveling with friends. She is part of a group which goes regularly to Idylwild for mountain retreat time. She also likes to visit Portland, where her older son Dennis lives. Her younger son is carrying on the family tradition of living in San Diego, close to the ocean.
