Expanding the Family for Christmas

Dear Friends:

A recent thank you note to the church reads, "Thank you for the flowers celebrating the birth of Olivia F. and Benjamin J. We are touched by your love and comforted by your support."

In this season focused on Christ's birth, the note reminds me how important it is that we continue to reach out and welcome new members of our church family.

Many times people come to church with lonely or broken hearts. Often people come in search of guidance or direction. Frequently, some crisis or concern compels them to come.

If we can smile or speak to a stranger; if we can express interest or say a prayer; if we can learn a name and remember it the next time, then chances are that we are accomplishing something far more significant than we will ever realize.

A warm and welcoming community is a refuge and balm in a crazy, high speed, and impersonal world. When people are far from family or adjusting to a new job; when they have health concerns or have suffered the loss of a loved one; when they feel worried about what the world is coming to, it can make all the difference to meet somebody who cares.

We can't fix all the problems or erase all the distress in people's lives, but we can make their struggles and hardships easier to bear by listening, by caring, and by assuring them through our actions that God cares about what they are going through.

So next time you introduce yourself to someone new during the "passing the peace" or the "coffee fellowship" remember that you are helping someone realize they are not alone. Next time you write a note, send an email, or make a phone call enquiring about someone's well being, remember that you are sharing God's love with them. Next time you help cook and serve a meal at church, remember that you are helping some special children of God feel that there really is a place for them at God's table.

The season of Christmas revolves around the image of a holy family. It is a time when many people know the joy of re connecting with their families. It is also a time when many people feel distant or alienated from their families. Let this be a time when we as a church open our arms to include EVERY member of God's family in our prayers and celebrations.

Merry Christmas to all,

Pastor April
