Stellar Ministries

Dear Friends,

I was very honored on July 1 to receive from the hands of Ron J. and Ted T. on a unique "award" commemorating ten years of ministry together with you, the people of the Pacific Beach United Methodist Church. That particular day, like so many others we have shared together was filled with love and joy as we worshiped outdoors and shared in a potluck and barbecue. Record attendance, patriotic decorations, and wafting bubbles made the occasion especially festive.

Only two weeks later, I was again overwhelmed by your many kindnesses to me. This time, it was my 41st birthday. (Imagine!) Cards, flowers, hugs, and best wishes made me feel appreciated and loved. I was happy to have both Elizabeth and Christina in church with me that day; we eventually hooked up with Andy for a happy family dinner.

Indeed, as the gift you gave me says, it has been 10 years of stellar ministry, and the 'stellar' part has been sharing it with all of you. Your ministry to me, to one another, and to the community has been and continues to be remarkable. The ten years have not been without their hardships and sorrows, but the fact that we have shared those as well, have made them more bearable.

One of the life-giving ministries that PB UMC has supported for several years now is the Wednesday evening free meal and medical/dental/acupuncture clinics which we have hosted in our building. A transition is currently taking place in our relationship with Harvest for the Hungry (an independent non-profit organization) but my hope is that our commitment to the Wednesday night meal and clinics will continue. The food, the sense of community, and the health services shared each week are deeply appreciated by all who participate.

There is a special, hard-working group within our church whose work often goes unrecognized. I would like to thank, for their 'stellar ministry' the PB UMC Board of Trustees, whose responsibility is to maintain our church facilities as a safe, welcoming and attractive place. This summer their work has included some unusual challenges, and they have done their best to make decisions that will support the good of all in our community and family of faith.

The word 'stellar' makes me think of Philippians 2:15, which speaks of how, as followers of Jesus, we are to shine like stars in the world and hold fast to the word of life. You all are my shining stars, and I thank you for your light.

Love,

Pastor April
